Blackpool Lib Dems call for referendum on Super Casino

2.28.57pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 30th Apr 2006

Casino

The following motion was passed unanimously at a recent meeting of Blackpool, Cleveleys & Fleetwood Liberal Democrats.

Blackpool, Cleveleys & Fleetwood Liberal Democrats are concerned that the people of Blackpool have not had the opportunity to vote on the heavily hyped Proposals for a large Resort Casino to be built in Central Blackpool. We believe that the damage to Blackpool's already tarnished image and the social costs created by a large Casino could be greater than the possible benefits. Liberal Democrats believe that an issue of this magnitude which will permanently and fundamentally change both the image and geography of Blackpool should be voted upon by the residents of Blackpool. It must be their decision and not left to just forty two Councillors, after all it is the biggest change to Central Blackpool since the building of the Tower. We therefore propose that a referendum be held of all electors within Blackpool's boundary to decide this issue. We would expect the media to allow equal opportunity for both the pro and anti casino camps to air their views. We will arrange a number of genuine public meetings with both camps being given equal status. A full postal voting opportunity of all Blackpool's electors to follow, asking "Do you want a resort Casino in Central Blackpool" with box's marked Yes & No. A simple majority in favour or against to decide Council Policy.
