Coun Gary Coleman by faded road markings at a junction in central Blackpool
CHILDREN could die because of lack of paint on Blackpool's roads, a leading councillor has claimed.
An urgent review into road markings will be carried out after Gary Coleman called for Blackpool Council to implement a permanent programme for painting roads.
The labour councillor said: "There are more junctions than I can count that are in need of repainting because of faded markings. The council can spend £20,000 on a painted wall outside Yates's, so why can't it save lives and paint roads?
"I don't want to see children injured because they didn't see road markings, or even die simply because a lack of paint.
"The budget for highways is £20,000 and £50,000 for Streetscene. The Streetscene budget could stretch to paint 200-250 road junctions per year."
Carol Bracegirdle, the traffic management and road safety manager, said: "We will launch an immediate review into road markings."
Blackpool Liberal Democrat, Jon Bamborough said:
"It would be useful if, when carrying out this review, that they also carry out a review of potholes. These are causing even more problems both for motorists and pedestrians when motorists swerve to avoid them."
